Ottawa’s first roller derby league, Ottawa Roller Derby (ORD) offers women 18 and older a fun, safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for skaters of all skill levels to share their love of roller derby. ORD is managed by a volunteer board of directors and committees drawn from the membership and we adhere to the standards of the sport by following the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rules.
ORD encourages personal bests, sportsmanship, and safe play. In order to support the diverse skill levels and needs of our members, ORD takes a graduated approach to Minimum Skills testing that allows each skater to advance at their own pace. This approach breaks up the skills required to pass the WFTDA Minimum Skills Test into four different levels. New players are welcomed on a regular basis through our Crash Course 101, a seven-week course that covers the basic skating skills of roller derby. Once a player graduates from Crash Course 101 they become a dues-paying and insured member of our league and work to graduate through Levels 2, 3 and 4. When a skater has passed all four levels, the skater will have achieved their Minimum Skills at full and low contact levels, and they may then choose to become a member of our travel team, the Bytown Blackhearts. The Blackhearts bout against both low and full-contact teams in and around the Ottawa area in a bouting season that lasts from May to August."
